View Hidden Email Header in Windows Live or Hotmail Accounts

You will only need to do this when trying to discover an ISP. Sometimes it’s to report spam abuse but I have even needed this to discover where an automated email is coming from in order to change the email address it is sending to.

Without further ado, here are the instructions.

  1. Sign into your hotmail or live email account.
  2. Open the email you want to discover the header of…
  3. On the right-hand side, just under the date, you’ll notice “Reply” with square containing a tiny dot. Click on the dot to view the menu options (see image below):
  4. Select “View message source”:

Your email header will be completely revealed on a new tab within your browser. Simply copy and paste, or save the entire page as a .txt file.

Hope this helps solve your need to know. I’ve had to do this so many times, with several months in between times that I decided to post the instructions here for my safe keeping, and to share with others too.

Please be sure to comment below if this helped you out. Knowing what others needs are makes it more intriguing for me to share my resolves here.

      Hi lilith,

It should work for any email address being displayed. That's how you can discover the actual server that sent the email…. which is how the FBI is now able to shut down servers spamming us. You can read all about that here: http://opennet.net/blog/2012/07/fbi-shuts-down-dn
